New AI Behaviors and Military Vehicle Capabilities in VBS3

Aug 24, 2017

Orlando, Florida — Bohemia Interactive Simulations, a global developer of advanced military training and simulation software, has released its latest updates to Virtual Battlespace (VBS3). The latest version, VBS3 v17.3, is now available for customers to download at BISim’s website, https://bisimulations.com/support/downloads.

VBS3, which is used by hundreds of thousands of defense personnel worldwide for training and simulation, provides an immersive virtual environment, includes over 10,000 models, and comes with set-up tools to facilitate highly impactful mission rehearsal and training on tactics, techniques, and standard operating procedures.

The latest version of VBS3 includes a preview of the VBS Control “Behavior Pack” — a package of artificial intelligence features — as time-limited, beta content. These include new civilian, convoy, and doctrine-typical infantry combat behaviors, all created with BISim’s VBS Control Editor. The VBS Control Behavior Pack is available for purchase now, and BISim will continue to improve and add new AI behaviors in future VBS3 versions. Contact for pricing information.

“By using behavior trees to create these new artificial intelligence behaviors, AI in VBS3 becomes more modular,” said Pete Morrison, Co-CEO, BISim. “Our VBS Control AI editor provides more predictable, reliable and customizable AI behaviors for VBS3. For a limited time, we’re giving customers an opportunity to try out these new AI behaviors for free.”

From BISim’s recent work with the Swedish Armed Forces, we’re introducing physics-based turrets, which enables users to configure turrets, offering more realistic vehicle behavior. BISim has also developed tech so that its developers can create damageable subsystems in the model geometry of vehicles for customers when requested. Vehicle damage models can be broken into several parts such as turret ring, control panels or crew members, all of which are represented in the 3D space in the vehicle.

BISim also has made several updates to mortar and flare capabilities based on work with the U.S. Marine Corps. These capabilities include enabling mortars so that they can be fired by nearby players without having to man the mortars, configuring flares with smoke effects to be visible in daylight, and enabling configuration for the illumination time of flares.

VBS is utilized extensively in more than 50 countries by defense organizations such as the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, UK Ministry of Defence, Australian Defence Force, French Armed Forces, Bundeswehr, Canadian Armed Forces, Singapore Armed Forces, Republic of Korea Armed Forces, Japan Ground Self-Defence Force, and commercial customers such as Booz Allen Hamilton, Thales, Rheinmetall Defence Electronics, Leidos, and Lockheed Martin.
