BISim and Improbable Highlight the Power of Improbable’s Cloud-based Distributed Computing Platform at I/ITSEC with 1,500,000+ Simulated Entities Interacting in BISim’s VBS STE and VBS3

Dec 20, 2018

Improbable, a global company dedicated to building technology to enable powerful virtual worlds and simulations, demonstrated a massive simulation powered by its SpatialOS cloud-based distributed computing platform at I/ITSEC 2018 in Orlando, Florida.

The seamless simulation included over 1.5 million entities, including vehicles and non-player characters, populating geo-specific terrain rendered in Bohemia Interactive Simulations' (BISim) flagship simulation software products VBS3 and VBS STE.

At their booth, Improbable showed more than a million entities (AI-powered cars, aircraft and human characters) performing their daily activities in the virtual world - driving, walking, fighting, flying - and showing the potential for massive multiplayer simulation in the military training domain.

Improbable’s SpatialOS enables the creation of simulations and training environments of unprecedented scale, fidelity and complexity. SpatialOS is an open platform that leverages both cloud or local compute, and allows the integration of external simulators, behaviors, models, and engines used for game creation and military simulation. SpatialOS is uniquely capable as a computational platform to meet the ambitious scale and complexity requirements of the U.S. Army's Synthetic Training Environment (STE).

VBS3 is BISim’s flagship desktop simulation software, a comprehensive desktop training package based on commercial video game technology. VBS3 is used by defense and security organizations worldwide for tactical training, experimentation and mission rehearsal. VBS STE is a prototype desktop simulation and simulation host that combines an enhanced VBS simulation engine with VBS Blue whole-earth rendering built to meet the needs of future military training requirements, including the U.S. Army’s STE initiative.

STE is the U.S. Army’s initiative to converge virtual, constructive and gaming training environments into a unified architecture. This project will enable simulation systems Army-wide to leverage a persistent virtual world for any imaginable training need. BISim technology underpins funded R&D for One World Terrain and BISim is under contract to prototype other U.S. Army STE concepts.

The U.S. Army has cited operations in large urban environments as a critical area in training for future operations. A key challenge for producing realistic virtual world simulation has been how to simulate living, breathing cities with hundreds of thousands of AI entities going about their daily activities. Improbable’s SpatialOS combined with VBS3 and VBS STE help address this complex simulation requirement.

Visitors to I/ITSEC were able to view a simulation of this scale using VBS3 and VBS STE for the first time at Improbable’s booth.
